Next up in our At Home series, we're speaking with Monique from @bij_spiertjes_thuis, known for her minimalistic yet cosy interior style. Moment of Calm & Sol-Mates Abstract Canvas Set How would you describe your interior style? Monique's home has a neutral base throughout, using decorative accessories to add contrast, whilst natural elements like wood bring warmth and a sense of calm to her space. "My interior style can best be described as a mix of Japandi, Nordic and Soft Minimalism.", Monique explains. Where do you find your interior inspiration? Monique looks to many places for inspiration. She enjoys browsing interior magazines and following interior accounts on Instagram, but they are not always the ones you'd expect. "I follow accounts that have the same style as me but also extremes that are night and day different from me. I actually like this." Monique also draws inspiration from travel, with Italy being her favourite holiday destination, taking lots of photos of typical Italian streets and different stone walls. "Beautiful atmospheres can also be found in nature," she adds, "I try to reflect this in our house and garden." Soothing Seas Neutral Seascape Art What's your top interior tip? A top tip from Monique for creating a cohesive space is to choose a neutral base colour and use it throughout your home and garden. This ensures a feeling of connection and peace as you move through all the rooms in the house. Each space can have its own identity and atmosphere by adding wall decor and soft furnishings in contrasting colours. Monique also points out that "with a neutral base, you can easily respond to the changing seasons with these items. For example, choose light shades in spring and summer and add warm colours in autumn and winter." How do you like to spend a slow Sunday? An early riser, Monique likes to start a slow Sunday with a quiet moment to herself. "I can't really sleep in, which is great when the rest of our family can, as I can enjoy my first cup of tea in peace." Picture this with a cosy Sunday playlist, your favourite home magazines, and a catch-up with Instagram. It's the perfect slow start. Do you have any tips for choosing artwork? Monique believes that artwork should incorporate your interior's base colour. "Contrast colours, then do the rest," as she suggests using accessories to match your artwork or vice versa to tie everything together. Another top tip from Monique is to rotate artwork around different rooms to keep things fresh. "Go for one large work of art or choose two smaller ones from a series that together form one whole. You can vary this by moving the works of art." Walk Tall & Unwind Green Abstract Canvas Set What's your favourite piece from our collection? "Ohhh, that's a question of conscience because I have several favourites. But okay, Wonderfall abstract canvas art is high on my favourites list! This work of art has also been seen throughout the house. From the living room via the kitchen to the bedroom and back again. A versatile work of art." Wonderfall abstract canvas art Monique's mix of minimal styles and attention to detail creates a home that feels grounded yet full of personality. Her advice? Stick to a neutral base, change things up with seasonal accessories, and look to your surroundings for interior inspiration—it can be found on your favourite city break or out in nature.
